Is the New iPhone 6S Secretly Waterproof?

It’s a little-known fact that the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6S Plus are virtually waterproof. The word is starting to spread, but most owners of these devices are not even aware this feature exists on their phone that they shelled out hundreds of dollars for.

It’s not that it’s actually a “secret” per se, it’s just not very well known because, for whatever reason, Apple never promoted this feature in the promotional lead-up to the launch of the device, or in any advertising since.

Apparently, the discovery was made by individual testers and experiments who noticed the waterproofing when submerging the devices in water and / or taking them apart to see what’s inside. This only became public knowledge when people started posting youTube videos to demonstrate –

This video explains that there are parts in the phone specifically for water resistance, including new adhesive strips, a new gasket that lines the phone, and silicone seals around the logic board – which, it turns out, Apple had obtained a patent for in March of 2015.

So, if Apple went to all this trouble to make the iPhone 6s waterproof, or, at least, water resistant, then why not let people know?

An article from Popular Mechanics speculates that Apple likely didn’t mention the waterproofing feature because they have yet to master it, as the phone is not completely waterproof since damage can still occur to the headphone jack and the speaker.

This makes sense, as they would not want to make a big deal of claiming the phones are waterproof, only to have a backlash when these parts of the phone get water damage.

Regardless, it is exciting and reassuring that Apple is going down this road to reduce water damage on its phones. Water damage is usually the most difficult and most expensive type of damage to repair, so a truly waterproof phone would be massively embraced by phone users worldwide.
